When grandchildren were small, it was easier to keep promises to do things. Their wants were affordable. My daughter’s children got to go to Africa, New Zealand, Ireland and Spain. Another granddaughter got a week exploring the Grand Canyon, and another a trip to Alaska. Then it came time for my son’s oldest. My income had changed and I racked my brain how I could take him on a trip like his cousins. Shock, he didn’t want to go on a long trip. Just wanted to see his favorite basketball team, the Miami Heat, play a game. Now that sounds simple, just find a game in L A, I can drive there from San Diego, and we’ll be okay, right? Nope, months went by as I struggled to find a way to keep my promise for his special trip. The Lakers play Miami on Christmas Day and that didn’t go over with the family. So much for a game close by. I finally bit the bullet and this week he and I are flying to Miami to see his idols play in their own arena. We come back the next day. We may not have gone on a two week trip to Europe, but Tristn can return to school to tell his friends on his basketball team that his grandma took him all the way to Miami to see a very special game. Promise kept.
